Coastal and landscape workshops

Shawn Haselgrove is able to offer tailored landscape and coastal workshops designed to enhance your photography skills and enjoyment. The workshop will be on a 1:1 basis to ensure that you get the maximum from your time on location and to help you to understand more about how to get the most from your camera and to improve your images.

The Dorset coastline has some of the most stunning scenery in the UK and offers an abundance of photographic locations along the Jurassic Coast also iconic sites such as Corfe Castle the list of possible subject matter is wide and varying. The ideal time to shoot coastal location is around dawn and dusk, the so called golden hours, when the warm of the first and last light of the day can transform the scenery into something special. The colours that nature delivers around these times are often spectacular.

Photography at dawn will normally necessitate an early alarm call in order that you are in location at least 30-45 minutes prior to sunrise. Even if the sun is below the horizon it can light the underneath of clouds with hues of pink and orange. Once the sun is above the horizon, the opportunities continue as the low sidelight catches ripples and creates shadows.

A dusk shoot begins at a more sociable hour as we are in location a couple of hours before sunset to build up to the final sunset colours of the day. As the sun drops below the horizon, the colours in the sky can be fantastic and continue well after the sun has set.

We will discuss composition, filtration, focus, exposure and histograms. We will also look at the technical set up of shots, understanding the effect that focal length and perspective have on the final image. We will see how the change in shutter speed can affect the feel and mood of an image
